Machines and tools of the day
Unsophisticated? Hardly. Their
Simplicity exposes the intelligence and
Energy of the people, persevering
Under the difficulties of Nature.
Men, women, children, all had responsibilities.
One’s life, one’s goals, were driven by
Family and friends, their needs, their wants,
Antiquated to us, customary to them.
Past generations – poor generations,
Practicing and honing their skills, to stay alive.
A proud folk, self-reliant, creative, insightful
Longing to live, to better their lot.
Accepting Nature as both friend and enemy,
Cherishing their beliefs, optimism a challenge.
Handmade goods – there was no other way.
Individual spirit, energy, commitment
Accomplished so much, not for glory, but to survive.
This acrostic was inspired by a visit to the Museum of Appalachia, Norris TN, and it was published in the Museum’s November 2010 newsletter. The museum is a fantastic place to visit; plan to spend at least a whole day there.
